Clef did not start with a market map. It started with family.

My stepfather, Tim, spent more than thirty years building a tree-removal business from nothing into a profitable company with loyal customers and a real name in his town. When he was ready to step back, he did not sell it. He closed it. Not because no one would have bought it, but because it never occurred to him that he could sell, or that there were buyers who would have paid for what he built.

My grandfather did the same. He ran a main-street service business, drywall and the trades, for decades. Profitable. Sellable. When he was done, he locked the door and walked away.

They are not the exception. They are the rule. Most of the value in small business is built by people like Tim and my grandfather, and most of it disappears the same way: a good business, a fair price, a willing buyer somewhere out there, and no efficient system for any of them to find each other in time.

That is where we start. It is not where we stop. We are operators who have built and sold companies, and it was running our own acquisition searches that showed us how broken buying and selling a business really is. That’s why Clef was born, and we are building it the way we wish it had existed for Tim.
